#6 Ferrari-Carano Prevail West Face Blend, Alexander Valley Price: $34.99

Description: I thought the 2006 West Face was slightly better than the 2005. Again a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah, the wine shows more opulence, low acidity, and rich, concentrated fruit with a heady concoction of licorice, pepper, black currant, and tapenade. The wine provides some of the dusty, loamy soil notes that are no doubt a character of the Alexander Valley hillsides, with plenty of power, but also much more up-front fruit and a softer, more velvety style than the 2005. This fleshy wine should drink nicely for 10 - 12 years. - Robert Parker 91-94 points

#5 2007 Quintessa, Napa Valley Price: $134.00

Description: The 2007 looks to be one of Quintessa's stronger efforts in a number of years. Dark ruby/purple, with sweet black currant, cherry, and loamy soil notes intermixed with some subtle spice box and background oak, this wine is rich and medium to full-bodied, with round, silky tannins, and an attractive set of aromatics. Very accessible and drinkable now, it should age nicely for 15 or more years. 91pts. Robert Parker

#4 2007 Hess 19 Block Cuvee, Napa Valley Price: $25.99

Description: The 2007 19 Block Cuvee is Cabernet Sauvignon-based layered with Malbec, Merlot and Syrah to produce a wine with pronounced fruit characteristics. It has aromas of plum and black currant intermingled with caramel and molasses. The silky entry melts into an ultra-rich core of dark fruit. A supple finish is testament to this wine's immediate approachability.

#3 2007 Rodney Strong Symmetry, Alexander Valley Price: $39.99

Description: A great Bordeaux-style wine that can stand proudly next to Napa bottlings that cost far more. It's mainly Cabernet Sauvignon, with the other four permitted Meritage varieties, and there seems to be lots of new, sweetly toasted oak. The blackberry, cherry, red currant, mocha and bacon flavors are delicious, but even better is the tannic structure. It's soft and alluring enough to drink now. 94 points Wine Spectator
